Littérature
La première candidature ne demande aucune préparation particulière dans le domaine littéraire au sens strict (histoire littéraire, méthodes d'analyse, etc.). Les exigences à ce niveau ne sont pas différentes de celles que pourrait ou devrait avoir le professeur de langue maternelle en rhétorique, c'est-à-dire, goût de la lecture, capacité de comprendre et de résumer un texte et, dans le meilleur des cas, un certain "sens littéraire". Il va néanmoins de soi que l'étudiant se sentira d'autant plus à l'aise qu'il connaîtra mieux l'allemand.
Une manière utile - mais non indispensable - de se préparer est de commencer à lire des ouvrages littéraires allemands avant l'entrée à l'Université.

Anglais
Langue
La clé de la réussite est sans doute un travail régulier.

1. Exercices recommandés :
- lire régulièrement la presse (quotidiens et hebdomadaires britanniques et américains) et écouter la radio (BBC World Service ou Radio 4) ;
- transcrire 30 secondes d'émission radio tous les jours après enregistrement (transcription orthographique et non phonétique).
Utiliser ces enregistrements pour faire des exercices intensifs de compréhension à l'audition et de répétition (amélioration de la prononciation des mots et de l'intonation de la phrase) ;
- tout vérifier dans un bon dictionnaire.

2. Livres recommandés :
- Dictionnaires traductifs : Robert & Collins Senior, English-French, French-English, 1993 ou Dictionnaire Hachette & Oxford, français-anglais, anglais-français, Hachette O.U.P., 1994.
- Grammaire : Berland-Delepine, La grammaire anglaise de l'étudiant, niveau supérieur (Ophrys).
- Prononciation : J. Tardieu, La prononciation de l'anglais, Presses Pocket (Il existe également une présentation livre + cassette. La cassette n'est pas vendue séparément).
- Vocabulaire : Liz Walter (éd.), Cambridge English-French Wordroutes, C.U.P., 1994.
Littérature
Tous les cours se donnant en anglais, il va de soi qu'une bonne connaissance de l'anglais parlé et écrit est souhaitable. Il existe cependant des séances de conversation et des cours d'analyse des textes facultatifs pour les étudiants qui estimeraient leur préparation insuffisante.

1. Histoire de la littérature
Aucune connaissance préalable à l'entrée n'est indispensable. Cependant, la lecture du livre de David Mc Dowall, Illustrated History of Britain (Longman) peut fournir un cadre de référence utile.

2. Étude de textes littéraires
Bien comprendre un texte, être capable de le résumer et d'en présenter une synthèse cohérente et structurée - oralement et par écrit - sont des aptitudes qu'il est souhaitable de développer.

3. Utilisation des dictionnaires
- traductif : Robert et Collins "Senior" ou Hachette-Oxford
- explicatif : Collins English Dictionary, ou Webster’s Dictionary, ou Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (encyclopedic edition).

Preparatory Activities

In order to ease the transition between secondary and university education, the ISLV (Institut Supérieur des Langues Vivantes) operates, in collaboration with the Department, intensive language courses for the benefit of eventual students. These courses help students to improve their knowledge considerably, and to get a first taste of university teaching. Full information is available from the Institut Supérieur des Langues Vivantes, place 20 Août, 4000 Liège, Tel: 04.366.55.17 (or 04.366.55.18), or from the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, 04.366.54.66 (German), O4.36656.73 (Dutch), 04.366.53.96 (English). These courses take place in August and September.

Literature
The first candidature does not assume or expect any previous experience of literature in the technical sense (history of literature, analytical methods, etc.). The requirements at this level are no different to those one might think a native language teacher of rhetoric could or should possess: [a taste for literature][literary taste], the ability to understand and synthesise a text, and, in the best cases, a certain literary sensitivity. It nevertheless goes without saying that the students will feel much more comfortable with the material as they get to know German more and more.
A useful, but not indispensable, way of preparing is to read German texts before starting at university.

Language
As for other courses the key to success is regular work and practice.

1. Recommended exercises.
- regular reading of the press (British and American daily and weekly newspapers) and listening to the radio (BBC World Service, MW648, or Radio 4, LW198)
- daily taping and transcribing of 30 seconds of a radio programme (orthographic, not phonetic, transcription).
Using these taped snippets to do intensive listening comprehension exercises and speaking practice (improving word pronunciation and sentence intonation)
- checking everything in a good dictionary.

2. Recommended textbooks:
- Translational dictionaries Robert & Collins Senior, English-French, French-English, 1993 or Dictionnaire Hachette & Oxford, français-anglais, anglais-français, Hachette O.U.P., 1994.

Literature
All the courses being given in English, a good knowledge of spoken and written English is an asset; however there are optional conversation and textual analysis classes available for students who feel that their preparation is insufficient.

1. History of literature
No previous knowledge is necessary. Nevertheless, some general notions of European history might help.

2. Study of literary texts
Being able to understand literary texts, and being capable of summarising and producing a coherent and structured synthesis - both orally and in writing - are skills that will be developed.
